On the 26th anniversary of his death, Clifton Chenier, the King of Zydeco, is still winning awards. The Recording Academy, parent company of the Grammys, announced today that Chenier is a 2014 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, one of its Special Merit Awards.

Chenier, a Grammy winner in 1983 and National Heritage Fellowship winner in 1984, died Dec. 12, 1987, following complications from diabetes. He was 62.

Chenier joins a Lifetime Achievement Award class that includes the Beatles, Isley Brothers, Kris Kristofferson, Kraftwerk and Latin singer and pianist Armando Manzanero. The honorees will be saluted at an invitation-only ceremony Jan. 25, the day before the 56th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

The honorees will be acknowledged during the Grammy’s prime time broadcast on CBS.

“It is a great privilege to recognize such an exceptional group of honorees and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to the recording industry,” said Neil Portnow, president/CEO of the Recording Academy in a press release.

“This astoundingly unique and gifted group have created some of the most distinguished and influential work in our musical history. Their legacies are timeless and legendary, and their creativity will continue to influence and inspire future generations.”

Chenier, an Opelousas native and longtime Lafayette resident, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011 for his landmark “Bogalusa Boogie” album.
