Geno Delafose has been performing for more than 30 years, but he’s only 41 years old. How can that be?

Delafose is one of many veteran musicians who are still young men in zydeco, a genre ripe with second-, third- and fourth-generation players. They carry family names of Ardoin, Broussard, Carrier, Chavis, Chenier, Frank and more.

Geno was 8 years old when he started playing rubboard in his father’s band, John Delafose and the Eunice Playboys. Shortly after John suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 on stage at Richard’s Club in Lawtell, Geno took the reins with his band French Rockin’ Boogie. Today, few bands are busier, with the band averaging four to five local gigs every weekend.

Delafose, a 2007 Grammy nominee, plays his 10th gig since Dec. 20 when he hosts the annual New Year’s Eve Dance at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vermilionville. Tickets, which are $35, sell out early, so get them ASAP.

The Vermilionville dance is one of many opportunities for live entertainment to ring in the new year. Here are some other chances to party like it’s 2014. Happy new year!

New Year’s Noon

Children don’t have to stay up until midnight to see the new year arrive. The Children’s Museum of Acadiana lets them celebrate early with the 17th Annual New Year’s Noon Carnival & Countdown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the museum, 201 E. Congress St., in downtown Lafayette.

The carnival features outdoor game booths, crafts and face painting. Kids, toddler age to 12, can enjoy a confetti blizzard, fish out a catch of the day, make noise makers and lariats, and enjoy kiddie cuisine.

Several ball and prize drops will take place inside the museum, a hands-on facility with a variety of interactive exhibits, special services, performances and workshops.

Admission is $7. Tickets are 25 cents each for outdoor carnival games, crafts and food. Call 337-232-8500 for more details.

The Blue Moon Coverup

Rareluth opens the Blue Moon Coverup and Mix Tape Exchange Show at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Blue Moon Saloon, 215 E. Convent St., in downtown Lafayette. The party, which also features the Cloudheavy Super Group, will have an intergalactic/space theme.

Rareluth, which includes Christine Peirce, Blake Ortego, Ryan Dejean and William Lynn Henderson, specializes in indie pop and electronica.

The Super Group, aka Live Mixtape DJs and the Mystic Dude Orchestra (which includes Andrew Toups, Frank Novak, Saul Pikit and Eethn Brasseaux), ends the show with a host of special guests.

Admission is $10. Visit the Rareluth page on Facebook for more information.
