Rusty Metoyer and The Zydeco Krush Release Their Second CD entitled "In Due Time"
Zydeco is filled with macho songs from musicians boasting about being innovators, magnets for haters and impersonators. But 24-year-old upstart Rusty Metoyer is just asking for a chance to live his dream.

In the title cut of his sophomore CD, “In Due Time,” Metoyer sings:

“I’m not trying to take what anybody’s got/ I just want to have my very own spot/ I know good things come with time/ but I feel like it’s my time to shine — in due time.”

Metoyer said his time is coming.

“A lot of people think you just start and get big out of nowhere,” said Metoyer, who lives in Lake Charles. “I was always told by other musicians that it takes time. You have to keep working at it and you’ll get there.

“The song pretty much says it’s no rush. I know you might not know who I am yet. But in due time, you’ll definitely know who I am. You’ll know my music — in due time.”

Metoyer’s time may have arrived as he gains radio airplay and new fans with his entertaining new CD. Following recent performances Zydeco Extravaganza at Blackham Coliseum and the Zydeco Breakfast at Café des Amis in Breaux Bridge, Metoyer makes his first appearance at Cowboys Friday night.

Except for the bluesy classic, “Irene,” the 13-song CD is all original material with fresh lyrics and flavors of traditional and contemporary zydeco. The album includes a remixed version of “Louisiana Summertime,” a tune about fishing, front-porch sitting and other joys of bayou life.

The CD follows his debut, “Take My Hand,” which he released when he was barely out of high school.

“This CD is more in depth music-wise and with songwriting,” said Metoyer. “My first CD, I went in there, 19 years old, and really didn’t know anything, never had any music training.

“On my second CD, I’m a little more seasoned with it. I knew what I wanted to do, how I wanted to do it. The songwriting and the music arrangements are a lot better on this one. “

The CDs and live shows add to a family tradition for Metoyer. He grew up with both grandfathers, Cornelius Pappion and Louis Metoyer, and other family members playing instruments at holiday gatherings.

He was motivated to pick up the accordion at age 14, when a grandfather passed away. He learned and polished his skills listening to CDs from Keith Frank, Step Rideau and Geno Delafose.

Metoyer started his band, Zydeco Krush, in 2010, while he was still in high school. He took some time off while studying business at McNeese State, but played drums with Corey Ledet.

He became serious with his own band again, just in time to take part in the zydeco super group Creole United and their debut project, “Non Jamais Fait.”

Metoyer holds down a day job as a school bus driver, which still leaves time for his band and school. He holds on to hopes of making it in music — in due time.

“I’d like to it as far as I can. My biggest goal is to play Madison Square Garden. That’s been a goal since before I even knew I would play zydeco. That’s my life goal.

“All the biggest people ever have played there. Either that or the Super Bowl. Even if I don’t get that far, that’ll push me to get farther than if I was aiming for something lower.”
