Legendary trail ride DJ "Super Matt" Dies, Zydeco Comrade Sends Condolences

Original, legendary trail ride DJ, Joseph Matthew "Super Matt" Noel Sr., died Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. He was 78.  Noel was a military veteran who married Claudell Jean Baptiste after an honorable discharge. During their union they produced six children: Matthew, 
Jr., Sarah, Aaron, Mervin, Gladys, Clothield, Tyrell and Kyle.  In the 70's and 80's, Noel went by "Super Matt" when he played music at area trail rides, and was then dubbed "The First Legendary Trail Ride DJ."

World renowned zydeco musician, Keith Frank, sent heartfelt condolences to the Noel family through his Instagram page.

"I was deeply saddened by the news that my long time friend Matt Noel, Sr, better known as "Super Matt" passed," said Frank. "He was one of the original trail ride dj's and he will truly be missed."

Noel was also a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver Council 49 of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Breaux Bridge. Funeral services for Joseph Matthew "Super Matt" Noel Sr. will be held Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m., and conducted by Father Joseph Campion, SSJ.

Interment will follow immediately after in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 22 at Syrie Funeral Home from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 8:00 a.m.

He is survived by his wife, six children, 22 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and his brother Robert Noel.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Gladys Noel; a brother, Raymond Noel and his grandparents, Leo and Lavina Gobar.
