With spring fast approaching, Opelousas is gearing up for another season of its free Music and Market series.

Melanie Lee-Lebouef with Opelousas Tourism, which has hosted the series for the past decade, said the spring series begins April 17 and continues through May 22 with a show each Friday.

“The spring 2015 line-up overflows with Grammy award winners including Chubby Carriere, Buckwheat Zydeco and Steve Riley,” Lee-Lebouef said.

“And as in the past, each performance will not only feature Louisiana musicians but fresh, homegrown vegetables and other Louisiana products for purchase direct from local farmers and producers,” she said.

All events will start at 5:30 p.m. with the farmer’s market portion of the evening, with the music beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing through 8:30 p.m.

Most performances will be held at Le Vieux Village, 828 E. Landry St., just off Interstate 49.

The exception will be two performances on Courthouse Square downtown - Da Cajun Classics on May 1 and Louisiana Jam on May 15.

Patrice Melnick with Opelousas Tourism said both downtown events should be extraordinary.

“Da Cajun Classics is our swamp pop offering for the season. There will be lots of danceable tunes,” Melnick said.

She said the Louisiana Jam performance will be something most people have never seen before.

“It’s pretty darn special. It’s a cast of all-stars. Buckwheat Zydeco, Steve Riley and Lil Buck Sinegal don’t usually play together. You can expect some surprises,” Melnick said.

Lee-Lebouef said the first show this year on April 17, will also be something special.

“Music and Market kicks off with blues by the legendary Henry Gray & the Cats. Henry Gray’s career in American roots music spans more than 60 years,” she said.

From 1956 to 1968 he served as Howlin’ Wolf’s main piano player.

“He has also played with Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and many other blues greats. Since returning to Louisiana in 1968, Gray has performed at nearly every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as well as the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Chicago Blues Festival,” Lee-Lebouef said.

Other music acts throughout the spring series include Leroy Thomas & the Zydeco Roadrunners, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band and Sarah Jayde & the Sharecroppers.

Concert-goers are welcome to bring lawn chairs for seating.

Sponsors for the spring series include the City of Opelousas, Bodemuller the Printer, Cleco, Delta Media, Tobacco Free Living, Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation, Louisiana Lottery, the Jazz and Heritage Foundation, LSU AgCenter and ZydecoOnline.com.
