The 9th Annual Shreveport Blues Festival rolls into the CenturyLink Center Saturday.
This year’s lineup includes southern soul and blues artists Mel Waiters, TK Soul, Pokey Bear, Ms. Jody, Terry Wright and Bigg Robb.
While none of this year’s artists are strangers to Shreveport, Waiters and Soul are fixtures of the festival.
Waiters has performed since he was a teenager. In 1997, he released his debut album “Suki-Suki Man.” To this date, Waiter’s top hit is “Hole in the Wall” from his 1999 album, “Material Things.”
“When I hear the name Mel Waiters, I immediately think of ‘Hole in the Wall.’ I enjoy good old school music from him,” fan Janice Taylor said.
Known as “The Bad Boy of Southern Soul”, Soul reinvented himself in 2009 with the release of “Zydeco Bounce” and an accompanying line dance. The song is still a hit with area line dancing groups.
“Zydeco Bounce and anything with zydeco is really hot right now,” SB Stepper Cheryl Williams said.
Soul returned to his traditional style with the release of “Life After Love” in 2014.
The audience will experience the hits each artist is known for and learn some new songs.
Despite time and sound issues last year, fans such as Tonia Swiney are excited about this year’s show.
“This year I’m looking forward to a show that starts on time, sound equipment which sounds good because last year it sounded really bad and last but not least, a good time,” Swiney said.
“TK Soul and Mel Waiters performed last year, but everyone else is new on the roster and that’s good. Louisiana likes blues,” she said.
Repeat attendee Debra Morgan said she’s “been every year” and plans to attend again this year.
