There's the ride and then there's the zydeco: Both are important parts of what the Northeastern Trail Riders Association is all about. Honoring the Louisiana roots of many of the riders, zydeco is a near-constant soundtrack throughout the seven-day ride. The syncopated songs blend Creole French and English. Most are about dancing and loving.
"There's a zydeco tonight," the announcer leading the trail ride calls out from his Jeep as they roll through town. "Y'all come out!"
And many people do, helping the association raise money through entry fees. Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers, Lil' Porter and Jerome Batiste and the Zydeco Players have provided the night's entertainment throughout the ride. Wednesday night, the festivities also included a rodeo at the Crosby Fairgrounds.
