Uniting the Zydeco Nation
Mr. Stanley Dural, (known to the Zydeco Nation as Buckwheat Zydeco and the Zydeco Nation’s Proudest Creole Man) made a rare appearance and performance before a crowd of about 400 people at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, California on Monday, September 14, 2009.
As part of his 30th year anniversary tour, it was a night of “Love, Peace, and Happiness” as Buckwheat Zydeco delivered a smoking hot dose of high energy Zydeco Music - up close and personal, the only way he knows how – Buckwheat Zydeco style!
Held at Yoshi’s (a jazz supper club that is known for its great food, intimate atmosphere, and an impressive list of past performers), Buckwheat Zydeco did not disappoint old and new Zydeco Enthusiast as he greeted the crowd in Creole French, welcoming everyone to “The Bayou”, and announcing that he was taking them “back home”, referring to his beloved state of Louisiana.
Throughout the evening, Buckwheat Zydeco played many of his greatest and classic Zydeco songs, such as “Hard to Stop”, “Hey, Good Lookin’”, “Jackpot!”, and many others! In classic Buckwheat Zydeco style, he involved the audience by encouraging individuals in particular and the audience in general to sing along with his band.
One of the highlights of the evening was when a gentleman in the audience (along with his girlfriend), was asked to join Buckwheat Zydeco on stage. The audience’s excitement welled with anticipation as the gentleman proposed to his girlfriend with Buckwheat Zydeco leading the approval and applause. The young lady accepted the proposal, and mentioned that she was from New Orleans, and Buckwheat Zydeco started the couple’s journey together by playing the classic Fats Domino tune “walking to New Orleans” while the couple danced on stage.
The night continued with excitement and plenty more audience participation, whether by stomping their feet, dancing on the sidelines or singing along to “Love, Peace, and Happiness”. Buckwheat Zydeco continued to electrify and engage his audience all night long. He took the audience back to his early days when he played in Zydeco Roadhouses like Slim’s Y-Ki Ki, Elsido’s, Paul’s Playhouse, and Richard’s Club by playing his style of “Creole Jazz” on his Hammond organ piano; incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and soul music. By this time, the audience made a dance area near the stage while he performed. His final signature song for the evening was “What you gonna do?”
Buckwheat Zydeco is and continues to be one of the greatest live Zydeco performers in the worldwide Zydeco Nation”! I’m very proud and feel fortunate enough to have seen this wonderful living legend perform live in San Francisco, while on his 30th anniversary tour. My recommendation is that if you have an opportunity to see Buckwheat, then do it! It’s a great feeling to see a living legend perform and to feel his energy take over the entire audience.
