Fans are still trying to adjust to life without Stanley Dural Jr., leader of the band Buckwheat Zydeco. For more than 35 years, Dural and band won a Grammy and an Emmy while entertaining millions across the globe.

But Dural was back home in Lafayette nearly every November for the Thanksgiving Annual Food Drive. This year’s event will be the first since Dural died Sept. 24 after a long bout with lung cancer.

“Buckwheat was a regular supporter,” said Mary Chevalier of the Pillows of Hope, a nonprofit group that sponsors the Food Drive. “If he was in town, he was there every year.

“We’re going to miss him. We’re so used to him getting up there and performing for us. This year, we’re doing it as a tribute to Buckwheat.”

Sir Reginald Dural, Dural’s son, and the Ils Sont Partis Band keeps his father’s legacy alive as the yearly Food Drive returns to El Sido’s  Zydeco and Blues Club in Lafayette. Music starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is $12 and canned good donations are accepted.

More than a dozen zydeco and R&B bands are scheduled to perform, including Reginald Dural, Lil Nathan, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, Major Handy, Lil Buck Sinegal, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters, Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies, Vibe R&B Band, Corey and the Hot Peppers, Leroy Thomas, Lil Runt, comedian Mr. Jarrod and Gilly Wiltz.

The Pillows of Hope have been working on the Food Drive with El Sido’s owner Sid Williams for the past four years. The first drive was held in 1986 at Williams’ club.

Organizers estimate more than 100,000 people have received Thanksgiving meals since the event began. Chevalier said the drive falls in line with their mission has a “helping hands” organization.

“Through the entire year, we raise money from the ground on up,” said Chevalier. “We help people with utilities, clothing, food and back-to-school things, Easter baskets, Christmas toys.”

John Broussard and Melvin Ceasar, hosts of the "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale'" program on KRVS 88.7 FM, will emcee Wednesday's show.
