ZHPS Historical Moment - The Term "Zydeco Nation" Developed & Coined

Newly Coined Word Defines a Musical Legacy and Culture 
in a New Digital Era

The term "Zydeco Nation" was first developed, coined, and used on March 1, 1996

On this day, March 1, 1996, the term “Zydeco Nation” was developed and coined...

The term "Zydeco Nation" was developed and first used by the newly formed Zydeco Historical & Preservation Society's planning committee in the development of its interactive web project ZydecoOnline.com, an interactive Internet project create a digital bridge that would link the “traditional offline Zydeco community” with then emerging “digital Zydeco community” and bring together authoritative information about Creole and Zydeco music and the black Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas.

The initial ZHPS planning committee members were Rod Sias, Mona Kennerson, Moriba Karamoko, and Darius Sias.  ZydecoOnline.com – Uniting the Zydeco Nation, initially was soft launched in 2001 and formally launched in 2002.  The first major revision and upgrade of the ZydecoOnline.com website took place in 2004.  Since 2004, the ZydecoOnline.com website has undergone 5 major revisions and upgrades.

The term “Zydeco Nation” is an evolution from the term “Zydeco Community” in an effort to define a worldwide musical culture in a new digital era that is rooted in the black Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas.  Thus the motto “ZydecoOnline.com – Uniting the Zydeco Nation” was used to digitally brand the ZHPS project and to describe a musical tradition and culture played, honored and respected by many different peoples from many different cultures.

Currently, the term “Zydeco Nation” is widely used and accepted in the digital landscape as well as offline to describe the worldwide Zydeco musical culture and the black Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana, Texas and its cultural extensions.  The term “Zydeco Nation” has been and is used in social media, websites, traditional marketing media, radio, video, and documentary projects.

The Zydeco Historical and Preservation Society, Inc. is a grassroots, not for profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the preservation, understanding, and development of Zydeco music, history, and culture as well as rural black Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas. 

The ZHPS was established in 2000 in Opelousas, Louisiana (Zydeco Capital of the World) by citizens concerned about the loss of irreplaceable segments of Zydeco Music and Creole heritage that included structures, oral traditions, collective community memories and fabric, and the facilitation and healthy development of present day Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas.
