The holy trinity of local music — zydeco, Cajun, swamp pop — make up the spring schedule of Music & Market, the free concert series that combines fresh music and fresh vegetables as it celebrates its 10th anniversary Friday evenings in St. Landry Parish.
Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble take to the stage in the season opener April 22 at Le Vieux Village/Farmers Market Pavilion, located in the Opelousas Tourist Center at 828 East Landry Street.
The series spotlights some of Louisiana’s best musical artists and popular fresh homegrown vegetables for purchase directly from local farmers. Music & Market runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music beginning at 6 p.m. Concert-goers are welcome to bring lawn chairs for seating.
Born into a musical family, Taylor began his professional career at age 16 by playing drums in his father's group, Jude Taylor and the Burning Flames, a band steeped in Louisiana blues, soul and zydeco. By the age of 25, Taylor had played drums with some of Louisiana's musical legends, including Steve Riley, Lil’ Bob and the Lollipops, and his uncles, Paul "Lil’ Buck” Sinegal and Wayne "Blue" Burns. He toured with CJ Chenier, son of the "King of Zydeco" Clifton Chenier, and a zydeco legend in his own right.
While traveling with CJ Chenier's band, he became interested in playing the accordion and he learned to play within six months. Taylor’s soulful, bluesy vocals and the band's hard driving zydeco beat blend to create their unique style of zydeco and blues.
Beverages and food will be available including barbeque from Briskett Baskett, a barbeque spot in Opelousas.
The featured Louisiana product for the opening concert will be mustard greens. Farmers provide samples and recipe ideas for this healthy, leafy vegetable. Other featured produce this season include kale, turnip, cucumbers and other farm-fresh offerings.
Visitors can purchase fresh vegetables Friday nights or during regular Farmers Market hours: Tues, Thurs and Saturday, 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.
